One Equal Music

One Equal Music

is the name St Peter’s Singers gave to a project we undertook in the Summer of 2014, performing and then recording modern spiritual music in the beautiful yet unashamedly commercial setting of Leeds’ Victoria Quarter.

The phrase appears in William Harris’ glorious 1961 setting of a prayer by John Donne, Bring us O Lord God at our last awakening. It encapsulates the key ideas behind the project: to sing music that evokes an other-worldly serenity and beauty, telling of mysteries in our lives that words cannot express, and to sing it to people who might not otherwise get to hear it. For us ‘equal’ implies ‘equal access’ and universality, as well as harmonic perfection.

In order for this music to work, it requires the right setting. Donne’s prayer speaks of ‘the house and gate of heaven’, and with its stunning architecture, light, and acoustics – reminiscent of many cathedrals - the Victoria Quarter allows this music to bloom, even at the price of occasional background noise !

We made two impromptu appearances in the Victoria Quarter singing Bring us, O Lord God and other works while shoppers passed by, followed by a live concert in glorious evening light after trading had ceased.

Philip Moore came especially to hear The Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The project was made possible through the generosity of many donors both within the choir and through our crowdfunding appeal – to them our heartfelt thanks !
